Paper mills, a protected heritage
El Penedès offers outstanding landscapes, characterized by never-ending vineyards interspersed with country houses, villages, unique heritage collections, and multiple wine and cava cellars which have brought the area international recognition.
But in addition to vineyards, Torrelavit, on the banks of the Riudebitlles, has a long history in paper. The river provided the perfect situation for the appearance of the paper industry in the 17th and 18th centuries, and became even more valuable in the 19th and 20th centuries when it became an industrial river and the old paper mills were turned into large centres and paper factories.
In 2013, the Town Hall de Torrelavit passed the Special Urbanistic Plan for Protecting Torrelavit Paper mills because they were considered to form a relevant group of buildings from the beginning of the Catalan Industrial Revolution.
